Moroccan Adventurers
Back in November of 2013, Jerry and Gigi Foster-Julian (a happily married couple and long time members of the Sirens) had a Moroccan adventure. They are no strangers to motorcycle tours overseas. Jerry briefly described the trip as "starting in Malaga, Spain, with a high speed ferry ride across the Strait of Gibraltar to north Africa. Our first night in Morocco was in a small mountain town called Chefchaoune which we had stayed in several years ago on another tour, then it was on to Fes, a modern city with an ancient Medina. A guide is necessary to navigate the Medina as there is no motorized traffic and the alley ways serve as the 'roads'. The buildings are very close together, and the ally ways are not named. There are no maps and a GPS won't work, so a guide is a necessity if you ever want to find your way out. We spent one full day exploring the Medina, visiting a rug shop, an apothecary, and leather tanning vats. The roads were good but you had to watch out for the critters who were not fenced in: goats, sheep, camels, Barbary apes, donkeys, etc. It was far colder than we expected so the raingear came in handy though we both wished we had our electrics. A two night stop in Erfoud let us ride to the Erg Chebbi Dunes, rent ATV's to play in the sand, visit a Bedouin camp, see a fossil quarry and take a moonlight camel ride in the dunes. The grand square and Medina in Marrakesh was everything it was touted as being: snake charmers, North African bands, lots of souvenir goodies, colorful pottery, food kiosks and lots of tourists. The rest of the ride was in getting back to Spain with overnights in Rabat and Tangier. The weather was good except for the unexpected cold. l can't say enough good things about our guides and the tour company www.IMTBike.com. This was our fourth tour with them and we are doing #5 this fall to Corsica/Sardinia/Southern France."
